Days 13-15: Thankful for a Family Fun Weekend on a Budget
Now that I’m feeling better, we had a great weekend and I’m so thankful for my little family. Let me tell you about our family fun weekend on a budget!
So, you may have heard that I was laid up with pneumonia starting last Saturday. I really got sick around Wednesday, but by Saturday, I was at the hospital and being diagnosed. The doctors wanted me to take off work from Saturday through Friday so I spent most of that time in bed. I work from home as well as out of the home so I was able to keep up with that work, but my office work had to be taken care of by my coworkers.
By Friday afternoon, I was R-E-S-T-L-E-S-S! I was up and down from the bed, getting a few things done around the house, readjusting because my butt hurt from sitting so long, and finally bugged Howard enough that we picked up Benjamin early from the Y and headed out to Tyler for the evening. We took Benjamin to iJump so he could get some energy out at the trampoline park and then we headed to dinner at TGIFriday’s. Howard loves to go there because he can actually eat their french onion soup and feel satisfied. After dinner, we stopped by Barnes and Noble to pick up a couple of books for Benjamin because he’s read all of his chapter books at home. He decided on Harry Potter (the first one!) and one of his A to Z mysteries books. By that time, it was getting late so we headed home. It was a really fun evening and got me out of the house finally!
I woke up at 5:45am on Saturday and couldn’t go back to sleep. Benjamin was up by 6:30am and raring to go. I was able to convince him to watch cartoons for about an hour and then Howard woke up and they started playing. I took a quick nap and then was up again by 9:30ish. Then, we had to decide on what to do for the day. We’ve been struggling a little with money, but I got paid on Friday so we needed to take care of some errands around town. The boys needed haircuts and I needed to get my unibrow waxed so we went to do that first. We made a very quick trip to Walmart and then headed over to McDonald’s for a late lunch. Benjamin played while Howard and I watched for a little over an hour and then it was time to go home to watch a little football.
Once we were home, Benjamin and I played a few board games and made some crafts. He wanted to make Christmas cards so I made a paper garland while he made a snowman card that he wants to give to Granny and Papa. Howard watched some of his college football and then it was time to get going again. We headed out to the park so Benjamin could get a little more energy out and we stayed there until it was dark and cold and we felt a couple of rain drops.
Back home again, we just chilled for a little while, watching the end of the college football game and Benjamin took a bath. I worked on Howard’s dessert business page and then Howard cooked us dinner at home. While we were eating, we started watching Inside Out again. That is such a great movie! By the way, have you seen my Inside Out booklet of emotions? Once the movie was over, we sent the boy to bed and had a semi-relaxing evening (the boy kept getting up and begging to sleep in our room).
Sunday is all about going to church, having a little more family time, and then heading over to my dad’s house for Sunday dinner. We have a little routine on Sunday that takes up most of the day. We may try to sneak in another visit to the park or some board games on Sunday afternoon before going to my dad’s house.
Some of this may sound boring, but it’s our way of having a family fun weekend on a budget. For these types of weekend, I am thankful!

For family fun on a budget we always have a movie/game night. It cost about $5 to get a few snacks at the store. My boys love and it is a cheap way to spend time together as a family.
I think I’d do a fall afternoon hike, maybe some baking and perhaps a simple meal out. Your ideas were great too!
