DIY Hair Care: Cut and Color at Home
This post about DIY hair care, featuring how I cut and color at home, is a sponsored post; however, all stories, photos, and opinions are my own.
With all the changes I’ve made for my body and my health last month, I decided that it was time to make a change to my hair. I love to do my own DIY hair care when I can so I decided to cut and color my hair this weekend and share with you all about how I did it.
For the past two months I have been working on my insides and working to get healthy for my weight loss surgery and then maintaining after surgery. December was a very busy month and honestly, it was difficult to get in any “me time” and even harder for me to take care of my outward appearance. It seems that they busier we are as a family, the less I take care of my look.
On the one hand, I end up with this really long hair that is extremely healthy because I don’t use products or a blow dryer, but on the other hand, I tend to look like this all the time. Now that I’m feeling better after surgery, I decided it was time to check into changing my look a little. Life is still hectic and my bank account is still aching over Christmas and surgery payments, so I knew anything that I was going to do with my hair would be a DIY hair care routine.
My hair, although fairly healthy, is long and slightly colorful. About six months ago, I went to a salon and spent a lot of money to get a lot of red and a little blonde, but it has grown out quite a bit and my dishwater brown is starting to grow in as well. It’s a little eclectic at the moment, but I decided I wanted to go a little blonder so I picked up some products to get the ball rolling.
For my lightening regiment, I chose John Frieda’s Sheer Blonde® Go Blonder In-Shower Lightening Treatment and Sheer Blonde® Go Blonder Lightening Shampoo and Conditioner. I started with the NEW lightening treatment that is an in-shower treatment that instantly softens dark roots and boosts my blond by one shade. It doesn’t cause the damage that so often happens to my hair when I go to the salon or use the traditional at-home hair colour treatments. This lightening treatment is safe for natural or colour-treated hair and can be used on highlights and lowlights.
The lightening shampoo and conditioner is not a new product, but is perfect for my lightening regiment. Used with the lightening spray, I can go an additional two shades lighter for a gradually lightened natural-looking sun-kissed blonde. The shampoo and conditioner renews my hair’s healthy look and feel and is also safe for natural or colour-treated hair and can be used on highlights and lowlights.
Once I used the in-shower treatment and the shampoo/conditioner, I was ready for the next step. I’m going to show you how I cut bangs out of “almost” one length hair. It’s the easiest DIY hair care routine and it makes a huge difference.
The first step is to find the amount of hair you want to make into bangs. I use a comb to pull out the section of hair and make it even all the way across and then I pull the rest back into a ponytail. It is easiest to do this when your hair is still a little wet from your shower (or you can just spray it wet if you prefer).
Next you want to hold the scissors just below your eyebrow line (or further down if you want long bangs) and cut a straight line across. Alternatively, you could hold the hair straight up and cut a straight line there, but I don’t trust my shaky hands enough to do that. Be careful not to wrinkle up your forehead while cutting because your bangs will end up too short, but the below eyebrow measurement is usually a good place to cut so that they are the perfect length for your forehead when dry.
Here is a side view of my new colour and cut after I used the blow dryer (forEVER because I have so much hair). I can see the difference in the softness and a lighter colour on my hair. Can you see it?

You look great with bangs and your hair looks so vibrant! Love it! ‘ve always been afraid to try cutting my own or my daughters’ – but you gave some great tips. [client]
