Why I Love Being a Boy Mom {learning independence}
Around our house this week, it has been about being a big boy and growing up a little. This boy has had it good for many years, but it’s time to start learning some independence. I mean, we still help him get dressed at 7 years old! So, today’s list is going to end with a question. How do this boy mom teach a boy independence? Do I use charts and rewards or incentives like “be a big boy”? I love being a boy mom more than you know, but some day I would like to be the mom of a little man.
Here’s 5 more reason why I love being a boy mom:
11. Disney movies – My boy is obsessed with Big Hero 6 right now and he loves almost all of the Disney movies, but one thing that I don’t have to worry about it dress up clothes like princess gear and makeup. I can buy my boy some Disney books and toys and he’s happy as a lark.
12. McDonald’s playtime – The McDonald’s in our town has recently closed down for remodeling so the boy and I have been going on a McD tour of the surrounding towns. So far, we’ve been to Tyler, Athens, and Jacksonville, but there are a few more that we have yet to visit. It’s been fun to see him play and make friends at each new McD that we visit.
13. Reading is a new adventure – When I was growing up, it was all about girl books and Junie B. Jones, but being a boy mom has opened up my world, along with my boy, to a new set of adventures. I’m learning about boy books and series and we are engrossed in the A to Z mysteries right now.
14. Personal hygiene is different – My boy has a hard time remembering to brush his teeth, but when he does, he also has to have his “man deodorant” like his daddy. Last night after his bath, he still smelled like a boy (even though Daddy washed him – another place of independence that we need to teach) and I think it’s time to teach a little more personal hygiene to this stinky boy.
15. Getting dressed is a cinch – While we still need to teach a little more independence in getting dressed in the morning, picking out clothes for this boy each morning is a cinch. Pick a random colored shirt with a pair of khaki pants and some plain socks. We don’t have to worry about matching colors or patterns or accessories with this boy.
Growing up is serious business around our house these days. We need to teach a lot more independence while also enjoying our boy while he’s young. I think I’ve been holding onto this boy mom status a little too tight and it’s time I learn that someday I’ll be the mom of a little man.
I have no idea about independence in my house! LOL I have a girl with several disabilities and right now, we are working on independent life skills but it’s a work in progrewss. He’s adorable!

I would love to have a boy as well but I also find all of this to be true for my daughter. Except the man deodorant, she puts on big girl deodorant.
We used to have a play area at the McDonald’s restaurants in Florida. We don’t have those here (boo). Love that picture!
I have a 12 yr. old boy and 3 yr. old girl and they’re very different, but also very much alike. I think I just love being a mom period.

What a cutie. It’s so hard to watch them grow, because I want my children to be children for as long as possible. Yet there are so many wonderful things about each new stage.

I have 2 boys and they are very different. My oldest, who is 10, is naturally independent, but my youngest, who is 7, would crawl back inside my womb if he could. I probably baby him too much, but he IS my baby.
