Guess what, y’all? My little family is heading to Disney World in 13 days!
We are so excited to have the chance to spend Benjamin’s Spring Break at Disney World. We are driving there and it will be about a 24 hour drive so I just had to make these Big Hero 6 printable worksheets and a DIY travel lap desk for him enjoy during our trip.
Unless you’ve been under a rock, you’ve likely heard of this Oscar-winning movie, Big Hero 6, that was released on Blu-Ray and DVD on February 24. The boys and I were so excited about this movie when it came out in theaters that we drove an hour to Tyler to go see it and then I headed out last Tuesday to pick up the Blu-Ray/DVD combo pack so we could watch it again. We broke the bedtime rule on a school night so we could watch it THAT night! I also picked up some Big Hero 6 books and ordered a talking Baymax all for the trip to go along with the printable worksheets and the travel lap desk that I made for Benjamin. Now, we just have to pack and we’re ready to hit the road to Disney!
Before we leave; however, I just had to share these activity worksheets and a tutorial for how to make the travel lap desk so you can enjoy them as well.
What you’ll need:
- 1/2 yard of your favorite fabric
- staple gun
- wood-framed chalkboard or dry erase board (small enough for your child’s lap)
- beanbag pellets
- glue gun (optional)
- cardboard stripping (optional)
What you’ll do:
After you have chosen your favorite fabric, lay it out under your chalkboard or dry erase board to measure. You shouldn’t need more than 1/2 yard and I needed less. You will want to leave 2-3 inches of fabric around the board in order to have room for the pellets later.
Start by laying the fabric face down on the back of the board and staple along the edge. Here’s a tip: Start by stapling both corners and one in the middle and then gather the fabric along the way as you will have extra fabric. After you have stapled that first edge, things get a little trickier as you will have to reach inside the “pouch” to get to the inside of the fabric. Be sure to not leave too much space between the staples as the pellets could slide between the gaps, leaving you with a potential mess.
Leave the fourth edge open so you can load up your pouch with beanbag pellets. I just used the pellets from an old beanbag that Benjamin already had and you can’t really even tell that I took anything out (this travel lap desk doesn’t use much), but I know you can buy the pellets online in a bigger package if you are making more than one of these.
Once you have the pellets inside, you will need to gently lay it back down (board down) and staple on the outside of the desk to close the final edge. I actually chose to use hot glue on this edge so that it is more secure and looking back, I think I would have used the hot glue first and then secured with the staple gun for double protection.
The final product is so cute with the soft beanbag side for your lap and then a magnetic chalkboard on the other side that doubles as a desk. This was an easy project that took me only about one hour and Benjamin was so excited.
Once the travel lap desk was complete, Benjamin wanted to play pretend that we were headed to Disney World so he grabbed his talking Baymax and jumped in the car.
Of course, his first “activity” on our trip will be to try out his new Big Hero 6 printable worksheets.
He loves the word search best so he put a couple of magnets to hold it in place and I sat and waited while he solved the first few words on the puzzle.

Now that your travel lap desk (which is also good for use around the house) is complete, you’ll need some Big Hero 6 printable worksheets to get your kids even more excited about the movie or to just keep them busy while you’re traveling. I’ve made jpg and pdf files of the printables you see above and they’re free for you to print out and use as you wish (except to post on your own blog or website, of course).
Your purchase of the Big Hero 6 Blu-Ray/DVD + Gift With Purchase Set includes a digital movie on Vudu while supplies last! Simply scan your receipt using the Savings Catcher in the app. Then look for a message on your phone or email. Now you can watch Big Hero 6 on any device!
As I mentioned above, we bought the Blu-Ray/DVD combo pack of Big Hero 6 last week on the release day, but I need to trust you with a secret now. We are getting Benjamin a portable DVD player for the car before our trip! I can’t wait to see his face when he realizes he can watch all the Baymax (and his other favorite Disney movies) he wants as we drive 24+ hours to the Magic Kingdom!

Pinned this to two boards. I’d be game to try this before our next road trip to Mississippi so our son can comfortably write and work in the back seat.

We have been watching this movie nonstop for 2 days. It is ADORABLE. New favorite – I have GOT to get my son the Baymax yours has. Great lapdesk idea too!
Now that is ingenious–make your own lap desk! It really does sound simple and almost anyone could really use one of those! Yes, I have heard of this movie-but doubt I will go see it-no kids to go with! I do know I keep hearing good things about it on and off the internet!
