Mother Son Date Night Ideas
It seems that lately I only write about my boy when he’s in trouble and I’ve been learning more about this parenting thing. Today I’m celebrating being my boy’s mom by listing ways to make a mother son date night extra special.
As you know, Howard has been working a lot of nights and Benjamin and I are on our own until 9pm. Aside from homework and catching up on the fun things we did throughout the day, we’ve been finding creative ways to make our evenings special. We’ve been bonding over meals together, games and movies, and even a few fun activities. As with everything we do that make a family fun, I love to share it all with you guys to help you be a happy mama just like me.
Mother Son Date Night Ideas
Having a mother son date night doesn’t have to be overly extravagant and pricey. The only requirements (in my eyes) is that you have fun, everyone is happy, and you have time to bond together. Here are a few of my ideas:
Dinner and a Movie
Whether you decide to go out to dinner or stay in, make your mother son date night just like a regular date.
Your boy will love treating Mom just like Daddy gets to by opening the door for you, paying the ticket, or even ordering your meal. My boy has been ordering my water with lemon when we go out lately and he thinks it is so special. At the end of a meal, I give him the ticket and the money and he pays for dinner. He feels so special and I feel like I was treated to a nice dinner.
If you decide to stay in, you might set the table like you were having a fancy dinner or you can have a themed dinner and movie night like we had for our Smurfs 2 Movie Night. Make it fun and dress up for the occasion or just be silly and have pizza and popcorn in your jammies while you watch a fun movie. Remember – fun, happy, bonding!
Putt-Putt Golf
When Howard and I were dating, this was one of our favorite things to do. Of course, your boy will love it as well. Putt-putt golfing is relatively inexpensive and it doesn’t take a long time so you won’t be cutting into homework or bedtime if you time it right. Or you can always have your mother son date night on a weekend and play several rounds.
Pizza and Games
Almost every town has one of these pizza and game places like Chuck E. Cheese’s or Gattitown. Here in Palestine, we have Mazzio’s and Cici’s Pizza. My boy loves pizza and he thinks he’s a star if he can win me a stuffed animal from a crane game. Take your boy out for a fun time and give him lots of quarters or coins to play his little heart out. Don’t worry if you’re a little light on the bonding with this one since he’ll be playing so much. Or you can always jump in the bumper cars with him and act like a kid again.
Nature Walk
Take your little adventurer on a nature walk to get in some good exercise, get outdoors, and have some time to learn and talk all at the same time. If you’re really talented, you can develop a scavenger hunt before your boy gets home from school and the two of you can scavenge for all the items on your list. Collect leaves and make a leaf craft or just walk around and admire nature. Don’t worry, your boy will find something he’s fascinated by and you’ll enjoy seeing him get excited.
Just Play
For a low key, really inexpensive mother son date night, break out the toys and board games and just have a great night together. If you want to get out of the house, head to the park or the baseball field to toss a ball. If you’re stuck indoors, play a video game with your boy. Believe me, there is nothing more entertaining for a boy than to see his mom trying to master Skylanders when she has no hand-eye coordination! Whatever you find to do, make sure you are in the moment and playing what your son wants to play. So what if he cheats at Candyland or wants to use his new Undertaker action figure to play Chutes and Ladders. It really is just about having fun, being happy, and bonding together as mother and son.
Enjoy these moments, Mom, because they’re not going to last forever. Sure, you can be your boy’s friend for a long time, but there will be a time when he doesn’t want you around, even if just for a few years. Have fun with him now and those memories will stick with him forever.

Such great idea! I think my girls would like them, too! I need to remember to get out and date them every once and a while:)
I have three daughters, and I could do these with all of them as well. I love that there’s a mix of indoor and outdoor options.
Great ideas!! I have been working on making time for me and the boys individually and I thin a few movie dates are in our future!
Those sound like really fun ideas. I know that my son would enjoy them.
I was so happy to see Nature Walk on this list. I was going to suggest some type of physical activity. Just touching off previous posts of yours regarding improving your health, taking a walk with your son and hubby too when he’s available, or tossing a ball around in the back yard, is not only getting some great activity in, but it is also setting a great example. Your son could even ride his bike while you walked. Another thought would be to go to your local library. That would open up a whole new world of books, DVD’s, music, and much more. Whatever the two of you do, this time is precious and something I’m sure both of you will remember and cherish. Coloring is something I love to do with my nieces. We love coloring Mandalas. They are very relaxing.
Great ideas. I love taking my son out. We’ve done movies before. Most of the time I take him out to eat. He loves Texas Roadhouse.
Movie nights are our favorite. If we do an at-home movie night, I make sure to stock up on fun snacks to make it more special.
These are GREAT ideas! I love them because they’re inexpensive and easy to do.
I love this. My boy is older now (a teen)…but we still need that one on one time and some of these could be adjusted for that.
What a wonderful idea! My husband often takes our girls out on special dates like mini golf and the movies! It’s such a great way to make them feel special:)
With two boys, I get to balance time, but I think I might need to implement a mom/boy night soon. My youngest heads to kindergarten and my oldest hit junior high next year. A date night would be fun and good for them.
