Vicky Finds a Valentine
by Emlyn Chand
Review:
Valentine’s Day is right around the corner and every year, I have to explain to my boy about giving Valentine’s cards. He has loved seeing all of the red, pink, and white in the stores and tells me he wants to buy all of it for me. Someday I will have to teach him about picking that one special Valentine, but he’s only five so he can still be mine…although, I think he might have a couple little girls at daycare in mind.
Did you know that birds are people watchers, just like people are bird watchers? Emlyn Chand’s Bird Brain books are teaching us that and we are having fun learning about new ones all the time! First, we read about my boy’s favorite bird, the penguin, with Courtney Saves Christmas, then we read about a peppy peacock named Poppy in Poppy the Proud. We introduced you to a funny superhero parakeet with Honey the Hero, and then we played with a Sherlock Holmes loving crow named Davey the Detective! Last month, we read about a curious little woodpecker named Tommy and his tricky friend, Michael, the raccoon, in Tommy Goes Trick-or-Treating. And now we are reading about the most adorable little love bird, Vicky, who is learning about Valentine’s Day!
Vicky is not just any love bird. She is her best friend’s pet and she knows just how to be a great bird for this young girl. Vicky learns from Marie that Valentine’s Day is coming and she needs one special Valentine. While Marie is at school, Vicky gets out of her cage to find her Valentine. Marie’s dolly and the people dancing in a big glass box ignore Vicky, but Sparky, the family cat, seems very interested in being Vicky’s one special Valentine. Vicky learns that she didn’t need to go looking for a Valentine because her best friend was all she needed.
My boy loved reading about a love bird and especially loved to chirp! chirp! chirp! when he was happy that she found her Valentine. I pretty much have him convinced that when we see a flock of birds and they are making lots of noise that they are saying, “hello, Benjamin, how are you?” so this story just fit in perfectly. Of course, now he wants a pet bird, but since we don’t have a pet cat, we actually might consider it. My boy knows all about love and he is the sweetest, most cuddly boy I know. He and I went to a Mommy-Son Valentine dance this past Friday and he asked me to be his one special Valentine.
Vicky is happy young lovebird with a great life as the Johnson family pet. When her human Marie starts making Valentine’s Day cards for her first grade class, Vicky is definitely intrigued. “Valentine’s Day is very special,” Marie explains. “It only comes once a year, and when it comes, you have to tell everyone how much you love them. But most of all, you have to find a special friend to be your Valentine.” A day about love? That’s fantastic!
Now who can be Vicky’s special Valentine? A search begins as Vicky asks anyone who will listen to be her Valentine. Unfortunately, the pretty dolly ignores her, and so do the people in the glass box—and she’s not sure she can trust the family cat’s intentions.
Will the day come to a close before Vicky can find a Valentine? There’s only one way to find out. Join Vicky in her hunt for love in this special holiday edition of the color-illustrated Bird Brain Books series for children.

Emlyn, I will definitely have a conversation with my husband about the bird! I think it would be a fun pet (not like the boring fish that eventually died ) but I do need some reality check advice!
