I heard that accessories can make or break a wardrobe. It’s my #styleSurprise at Sears!!
It's no secret that I'm not a fashionista. My husband usually buys me new clothes for my birthday or Christmas or I take my older sister's hand-me-downs. The pictures above were from a shopping attempt while I was away for work and I was texting pics to my husband for fashion advice. Don't you just love the colorful socks?! (I may or may not have tons of funky socks and I may or may not wear mismatched socks just for fun) The fact is, I don't take time to care for myself and I purposely don't post pictures of myself on the blog other than my face. But…it is time!!
Through my blog, I am learning to take time for my family and for myself as well. Who knew that blogging would teach my family how to have family game nights and craft time and date night with Hubby? This past week, I learned that it is okay to spend some of my hard earned money on myself, even if it is for a laptop so I can work smarter, not harder!! It is time for me to look good!!
Time for a #styleSurprise at Sears!!
I have been working really hard to stick to a weight loss program with Hubby and I have lost 20 pounds in the first month. Clothes are starting to feel comfortable again. Now, I need to learn how to look good and feel good by getting new clothes and developing a "style". I grabbed my little sister and my boy and we headed out to Sears to check out their new styles and find something new just for me.
I was a little hesitant to shop for clothes so early in my weight loss (and you know I have every size of clothing already in my closet), but I heard from a good blogger friend that "accessories can make or break a wardrobe" so I decided that this #styleSurprise would be all about the accessories. Since I'm never good at dressing myself (except in jeans, t-shirts, and Polo boots), I reached out to my Instagram followers for feedback on what works and what doesn't because while my husband will tell me if something looks BAD, he also loves me no matter what.
My first try at some new footwear was a pair of fuzzy boots and while they were soft and very warm, they may not be practical for Texas weather. My followers on Instagram and Facebook weren't overly excited, but agreed they were cute and comfy.
Next up (and secretly my first choice) were some cute brown pumps. They were popular on Instagram and my sister said on Facebook that they were "Janet shoes". You see, along with my style challenges, I am also quite balance challenged so I have only attempted heels twice in my life (both times, weddings, and it was not good). These brown pumps are a natural choice for me, fun and comfortable, and I'm told they can be used for dressing up and casual. Bonus!
My boy, bless his heart, was trying really hard to help me find some shoes while we were shopping. He finally talked Aunt B to grab some of these shoes in my size. He loved them so much and said that we matched with our black and red. The shoes were actually really comfortable, but very clunky and reminded me a lot of the Polo boots that were sitting next to me. They were not popular on Instagram and my Aunt Linda pointed out on Facebook that I may not want my new style to match my 4 year old, "as charming and loveable and stylin as that 4-year-old is" <– her words, not mine!
Then my sister made the ultimate find – sparkles! I knew when I posted these that I would get some responses and some excitement. You see, many of my friends love sparkles and they would be proud of me adding some bling to my style. I was conflicted between the blue and the white so I decided to leave that up to those who were watching. The overwhelming response on Instagram was mostly BOTH, but on Facebook, BLUE was the winner. I was leaning toward blue so this was a no-brainer for me.
I didn't think about it at the time, but when I got home, Hubby reminded me that he finds jeans and white shoes quite attractive, so I was back the next day for the white ones, too.
Even my boy, again bless his heart, pointed out that I need a new purse (mine is hanging by some threads, literally). These bags got a few hearts on Instagram and the consensus on Facebook was that I should get the brown and the butterfly bags and (eek!) switch out bags for my outfits. These two were my faves so I went with it and we will just have to see if I can make myself do this because, well…

I love those brown flats. They are super cute!
I love your excitement in your weight loss and shopping. Congratulations on both and keep up the good work! I’m glad you could get you some amazing shoes. I love the boots and ballet flats…they would be perfect for my daughter! I would really like to give her a surprise/impromptu shopping trip for things like this. Thanks for letting us experience yours.
Congratulations on the weight loss! I like your tattoo. lol
hehe, thanks!!
I love the blue sparkle shoes too!
I am JUST like you when it comes to buying for myself. I wear the same clothes until they get holes that are too big to fix and then I am still reluctant to throw them out. “I’ll just wear them around the house.” My kids are always threatening to put me on “What Not To Wear.” lol I rarely wear makeup either. I still have problems shopping for myself, but I will try to do more about that after reading your blog post. Thanks!
I would LOVE to go on What Not to Wear, partly for the makeover, but mostly because they never have a plus sized woman who is TRULY plus sized (lumpy like me) and I need some help!
I love reading about your adventures in shopping because I’m horrible at shopping and picking out stuff that looks good! I live for comfort and fashionistas probably scoff at me! But kudos to YOU for losing weight, spending money on YOU, and trying new things! (oh and for also reading that awesome blog up there!
love ya, girl!!!

Isn’t that funny, Gena?! I was hoping you would notice that if you ever came across this post!! I was honestly reading it when I took that picture, too!!
I like the Boots! Those are my favorite style of Boots. You live in a warm climate, but I live where it gets cold! Can you believe it but Santa(My Husband) bought me a pair of boots like these for Christmas! How can a person scream when they open their present to find a pair of boots! I did! I also think that a very important accessory is perfume! My husband also bought me a really nice high quality perfume this Christmas!
I wish I could wear perfume (and boots!) but I’m allergic to almost every perfume I’ve come across.
YAY for sparkle shoes! I love your style Janet, both inside and out. Oh and I kind of feel all famous and stuff because you quoted me. Keep rockin that weight loss lady, you’re doing an amazing job and I’m so proud of you!

Thanks, Christy!! …and I think “infamous” might be the word you are looking for…
I love that you went shopping for accessories and you’re right, they do make the outfit! Your sparkle shoes are so cute and it’s sweet that you went back for the pair your husband liked. I think I need to be more like you and take into account what my husband likes

My husband doesn’t ask for much and he didn’t really ask for the white shoes, but he did remind me. It’s nice to be seen as beautiful so I’m always happy to keep catching his eye.
I’m not gonna lie. I love my accessories. You can never have too many. (Says the girl who bought five pairs of sweater leggings during my last trip to Sears…)

I’m not gonna lie, I would totally wear my Polo boots and jeans every day of the year if I didn’t live in Texas where it is hot every other day.
Hee hee, you’re right about the sparkles! Love them! So cool, yet understated…Second choice the cute brown pumps

I have gotten a few compliments on the sparkles already so they are in regular rotation now.
Woo hoo for accessories! A girl can never have too many pairs of shoes, or hair pieces, or earrings, or leggings, or….

Eek! Slow down…that’s too much for me all at once.
I love the sparkle shoes!!! I would have picked clothes a little less… frumpy~ says the woman who lives in yoga pants~ but I think it’s great that you stepped out of your comfort zone! You looked great in all the pics!
Tiffany, the sparkle shoes are great! The “frumpy” at the top is kind of a “before”-ish look.
