Football Family Traditions {Cavanaugh Sausage Shish Kabob}
If you have been reading my blog for any amount of time, you must know by now that we are a football family. We love to watch football and have our home dividing teams that we cheer on weekly. One of my favorite traditions that has grown in the past four years since Hubby and I moved to Palestine is that we spend every Sunday (and occasionally a Saturday) watching football at my dad's house and "home"gating with a great meal.
Football Family Traditions
From the time I was a small child, I knew that I lived in a football family and I have come to love and crave those football day traditions. When I was younger, my parents always had friends over to party and cheer for the Dallas Cowboys and there was always good food around. While it was a fun time back then, my family is building new traditions that cater more to my parents having grandchildren and these traditions are so much more fun.
Every Sunday, my boy knows that we go to church, come home to nap, and then head over to Papa's house. He knows that Papa is going to be cooking something yummy for dinner and then we are going to watch some football. My boy is a creature of habit so this just works for him! On the rare Sunday when my parents have a full weekend off work together, they may skip a week and it is always a family reunion the following week because we all missed each other.
Sunday evening at dad's house, watching football, always includes a huge meal that dad has been working on the entire day. We all sit together at the table, just like when I was a child, and we talk and eat and enjoy each other's company. Usually my boy has been snacking from the minute he walked in the door so occasionally he is providing the dinner entertainment for us running back and forth from the living room to the kitchen and doing something silly.
Cavanaugh Sausage Shish Kabobs
Hubby was a chef for twenty years before he and I met, but there are just not many chef opportunities in Palestine. You would have to read our family story to really understand, but he is now a butcher. Now that he has lived in Texas long enough, he has a curiosity about grilling and wants to learn more about football tailgating foods. He and I headed to Sam's Club to pick up some Cavanaugh Sausage and other ingredients to make shish kabobs on the grill so we could provide some of the food for Sunday's football dinner.
The Boy and Hubby had a great time putting the sausage, peppers, onions, and pineapple on the skewers. The Boy thought it was cool that he knew how to make the patterns and then, of course, when Hubby wanted to have a short sword fight with him.
Before Hubby put the shish kabobs on the grill, I was admiring how beautiful everything looked. One of the traditions that we are trying to instill in our family is to eat healthy and fresh. I have never eaten so colorful before! Find out more about Cavanaugh Sausage by following Club Tyson on Facebook and @ClubTyson on Twitter.
#MealsTogether
Eating together is such a wonderful time to catch up with your family and learn how everyone is doing. I have always loved the tradition of eating together at the table…and it just wouldn't feel right to not be with family while watching football. We're a football family and whether you are tailgating or homegating, a meal together always makes it more fun!
These shish kabobs were amazing and the sausage was juicy and not too "strong". I'm a very picky sausage eater and I don't like salty or greasy sausage. I couldn't decide whether I liked the Smoked Sausage or the Polish Sausage better and even our boy was eating it up and asking for more! I think this is a new favorite dish to take to dad's football Sundays – and especially to this year's epic Superbowl party.
Are you Ready for Sunday Night?
I just had to share my boy's Sunday Night football dance…
What traditions does your family have to watching football?!!

We usually end up eating pizza if we’re watching a football game as a family!
Our family has “pot-luck” Football Sundays. This way, everyone can enjoy the game and each other’s company without being bogged down doing ALL the cooking and/or preparations. Love your “shish-kabob’s” – looking forward to introducing them to our next football gathering!
I love this idea. I wish my dad would let us bring food more often!
these look delicious I love me some good food and football
Our football snacks usually revolve around cream cheee balls. Yours looks so much better
The advantage to marrying a chef!

Thanks, Kristin!!
The kabobs look great, we used to have big family meals at my great grandparents house that was sort of the same thing, my gram would cook all day, family members would be constantly coming through the door and my cousins and I would be ‘helping’ in the kitchen. I miss that, we don’t do anythinglike that now, I want to start again before the kids are all grown up. I don’t know a thing about football, so anytime family or friends gets together for a game I’m not exactly invited (i can practically hear them groan when I show up) I constantly ask questions, argue about why something was done a certain way, and cheer when the wrong team makes a touchdown. So needless to say football won’t be part of my new traditions, maybe a cat video marathon night….
I myself am not a football fan tho everyone else in the family is . I do want to make these Sausage shish kabobs – they look so good and sound delicious . Has all the good ingredients that I like to eat. The more colors of the them the better they are for you.
Cant wait to make some. Thanks for the recipe
I love the colorful Shish kabobs and it is good to remember that colorful is often more healthful. I am not a football fan, but I thought your son’s football dance was funny.
Aww…I’m so glad you liked his crazy dancing!
i’ve never seen these made. cool tradition!
