Howard B. Wigglebottom and the Monkey on His Back: A Tale About Telling the Truth
Howard B. Wigglebottom and the Monkey on His Back: A Tale About Telling the Truth
My family has grown to love Howard B. Wigglebottom in the past few months and it seems that every time we receive a new book with a new lesson, the timing could not be better.
My boy (now 4 years old) is still having issues with BMs in the potty. As a side note, he is cursed with my family’s constipation issues, but the trouble we have with the potty is nothing in comparison to the lying that has developed as a result.
In this story, Howard B. is presented with some situations where he is given the choice to tell the truth or make a very different decision…and he doesn’t make the right choice. When he continually makes the wrong choices he starts to feel the monkey growing on his back…and he doesn’t like it.
As adults we know what it feels like to answer to our conscience and I love the analogy of the monkey on Howard B’s back for my boy. When he has a BM “accident” at daycare (and then lies about having a mess in his pants) and they have to put the nasty clothes in a plastic bag for us to take home, he never wants to be the one to carry it out of daycare. I’ve started using this analogy with him and he has had to carry out the bag and put it straight into the washing machine when we get home. I’m not exactly sure that he’s “getting it” yet, but Howard B’s story has really helped.
