Day 21 – Thankful for a Home
Whether I live in just a house or I’ve made it a home, I am thankful for a roof over my head.
A few days ago, I was painting my DIY photo box and Benjamin wanted to paint with me. We had made a few canvas gifts for my dad and stepmom for Grandparent’s Day and had some extra canvases leftover so I gave him three colors of paint and let him go to town. He started with a house and then painted each of the three of us and then purple grass because grass of course. I know that these are just simple drawings from a 7 year old, but it means a lot to me that he knows what it feels like to have not just a house, but a home, and that we can provide a roof over his head.
Last night, Benjamin wasn’t feeling his own room and he was having trouble sleeping in his own bed. He slept with us for five years (from 2 to 7) and just recently started sleeping in his own bed. He finally fell asleep somewhere between 9 and 9:30, but woke up at 12:45 and returned to our room. He needed to be near his family and we let him sleep in our bed for the rest of the night. Of course, that meant that none of us slept well and we were up at 6am, but he needed to feel secure and that is what Howard and I are meant to provide.
I can’t really say that Howard and I have ever been at risk of losing our home, but times have been tight and I think we still live one paycheck away from not having a place to live. This time of year, when the cold weather hits, and the holidays are upon us, I think about all the homeless people who don’t have shelter every night or family to keep them safe. It breaks my heart and I wish there was more that I could do to help others.
But, today I’ll just have to be thankful for a home and pray for others to find the shelter and security they need.
Join me on my journey to write 30 days of thankfulness in the month of November for NaBloPoMo and follow my hashtag ā #CrazyThankful ā to find out what Iām thankful for this month and all year long!
It’s nice to see people who know how luck they are in life. It seems like you’re setting a great example for your son.

Whenever I am feeling down or unthankful this is the very first thing I think of! I have been in a situation before where I had NO idea where I was going to live. It was scary and I hope to never experience it again. So, ever since I start to feel ungrateful or anything I go back to this. Everytime! Great post! LifeAsLex

I too am very thankful for having a roof over our heads. There was a point in my life that I was homeless and it was not fun at all. No one should have to feel that way.
This is indeed a sweet story and like they say out of the mouth of babes which still kind of applies to their drawings too. It is so important to be thankful for what you have and to show you are grateful for it. Thanks for sharing the awareness.
I am also thankful for my home and the family I share it with. I pray for those that don’t have either of the two. I can’t imagine how hard it must be.
I am so thankful for my family. When I think of everything I have been through I honestly don’t know if I would have made it without them.
Homelessness is so prevalent in our country. Sometimes, we take for granted the things that we do have. I, too, am thankful for a roof over our heads.

It is so easy to focus on all of the negative, crazy things that are constantly surrounding us; however, all have things to be thankful for. What a blessing it would be to count those instead of our problems. It is also important to keep an attitude of gratitude throughout the year. Thanks for sharing. ~Jennifer

It’s easy to begin to take the roof over our heads for granted. I caught myself a few days ago doing just that, as I nitpicked every little thing that was bugging me about our house when just a few years ago, we couldn’t even begin to think about the possibility of having our very own home. It’s so important to take a few moments to realize how lucky and blessed we truly are.

I really needed to hear this. It’s the first Thanksgiving since my father passed. I still have a lot to be thankful for and I need to remember that.
I’m thankful for a roof over our head in today’s cold rain, a furnace that pumps out too much heat, two vehicles that run somewhat predictably, and an amazing husband and children!

I love reading posts about what everyone is thankful for! It really helps me get in the Thanksgiving spirit.
Considering I live up in Alaska, I am happy for a home with working HEAT. There is a definite homeless problem up here and I am surprised there are not more deaths each year as the winter can be brutal.

This is such a great reminder to be thankful for the things that we sometimes take forgranted. I don’t really think of it that often but I’m so thankful for my home (we just moved) and that I not only have a roof over my head but that it’s also one that I love!
