Light Their Path!
Champions for Kids SIMPLE Service Project #GELightingCFK
You know how when the holidays hit, they hit you square in the eyes and things start moving really fast?!! Well…we're still working on wrapping up our October donation drive of hygiene products for kids, but it's time to start thinking about November already!! During November, GE Lighting is sponsoring the Champions for Kids SIMPLE Service Project #GELightingCFK and inspiring us all to Light Their Path by taking the GE energy smart® Challenge. To find out more about GE Lighting, follow GE Lighting on Facebook or through @GELighting on Twitter.
Changes start at home
In the past year, my family has seen a lot of changes. Starting this blog was a huge catalyst for most of it. My eyes have been opened to so many different views that I can't help but bring my family along for the ride. A year ago, we were broke, depressed, boring, and were only thinking about ourselves and the immediate future. While we aren't super rich yet (it will happen!) we are doing better. We are recycling and looking at greener alternatives. I have recently discovered green cleaning and my allergies have been singing the praises! We also are looking at the future of our environment and how we can save money as well as the Earth for our big boy (who is growing up much faster than I would like).
Shed a little LIGHT on the subject
Even though things are looking up in our household, we are always looking for another way to save money. This month we are taking the GE energy smart® Challenge and switching out our (regular 'ole cheapie) light bulbs for the GE energy smart® bulbs. We want to save money and help the environment!! The Boy and I went shopping for some bulbs with our coupon and picked up a box of 75 watt bulbs to give us inspiration for how we are going to share the good news about these savings AND the money we are saving!!
Knowledge is the Food of the Soul – Plato
I had to literally walk through my house to count the light bulbs because we have a ridiculous number of lights, but I think I got them all at 24 bulbs (as I'm writing this, I realized that I didn't count the bathrooms and outside light…grr). Then, I visited the GE Energy Savings calculator to see what our family could save simply by replacing the cheapie bulbs (that always burn out anyway) with the GE energy smart® bulbs. Um, yeah…we can save almost $160 dollars a year!! And…the same amount of CO2 as planting 27,311,924 acres of trees! Now THAT is CRAZY!!
Providing Food and Education
I have a different type of goal this month and I'm still formulating ideas as I go along, but here's the plan. I have mentioned before that my family sought services from the local food bank in the past and I have tried to start giving back as I can and I want to continue that with my boy. When Hubby and I were going to the food bank, we weren't only in need of food, but we were also looking for ways to lower our bills overall. We made some huge cuts in some odd places, but we made it work. My plan is to gather up food for our local food bank and ask them to educate the recipients on the savings they can see by switching over to GE energy smart® light bulbs. When my donation is ready, I will also include some of the light bulbs, but I'm not in the position to donate enough for many households (partly because of my ridiculous 24+ bulbs in my own home…geez!) but this is more about the needs of the children in my community (good, nutritious food as the weather starts to cool off) and educating the families on ways they can save too!!
The Boy (and baby penguin) helped me shop at Walmart for some new light bulbs for our house. We decided to start with just a small package because several of our light fixtures hold 4 bulbs and we thought we could save even more by only using one bulb in those (now that's some stinkin' thinkin' right there!!). We're a little bit used to that anyway because there is always at least one or two bulbs in the light fixture burnt out. We'll see how we like it and decide if we need more. You can check out our #GELightingCFK shopping Google Album for our quick trip to savings!!
I'm ready to start sharing my savings with others and build the excitement!!
Holiday Food Donation Drive
East Texas Food Bank
Our Mission: To reduce hunger by providing food, support and education to those in need with passion and efficiency.
Speaking of the Holidays (remember way up there at the beginning when I mentioned the Holidays) it is almost November and the food banks need food to give up to and during the Holidays and school breaks! I will be asking my friends and family to help us with a large food donation for the East Texas Food Bank and I will be printing up fliers to give out information on the GE energy smart® Challenge. I'm going to challenge everyone to look at what they could save by switching and donate to the food drive as they can.
You can be One of Millions, too!!
Participating in a SIMPLE Service Project with Champions for Kids is easy, fun, and so rewarding. My boy loves to see how other people donate and then he can ham it up again for the camera when we drop off the donations! Get your kids and family involved – you will be amazed at what you can do!!
Find an organization in your area and create your own GE energy smart® Challenge-inspired Donation Drive!! Tell me all about it, and I'll write about it here on the blog! Report it on the Champions for Kids SIMPLE Service Project page, too! Tell Champions for Kids on their Facebook Page, and tweet them @Champions4Kids on Twitter.
