Help them Read! SIMPLE Service Project
Help them Read!
Nickelodeon Big Help Book Drive Champions for Kids SIMPLE Service Project #NickCFK #CBias
Have you seen the BIG GREEN TUB that I talked about last week? Have you heard about my goal to fill that BIG GREEN TUB with books to donate to the Palestine YMCA? Want to know how things turned out?!!
Promoting Literacy
The Boy and I have been talking all week about our donation of books to the Palestine YMCA. He is excited that his friends will be able to read some of his books and some other new books that we have received through donations and from shopping. You can see some of the books (and the BIG GREEN TUB) in my #NickCFK Google Album.
There are so many reasons to give to a local YMCA. My boy has attended the childcare with the Palestine YMCA since he was 8 weeks old. He is loved there and he loves every day that he gets to spend time with his friends and his favorite teachers. We are headed out of town today and he keeps telling me that he will miss his friends and Ms. Jane. He has such a tender heart so when I told him that we were gathering books to give to his friends and other children at the YMCA who don't have books, he was thrilled.
Did you know?
- Students who do more reading at home are better readers and have higher math scores. Students with more types of reading materials in the home also demonstrate greater reading proficiency.
- 67% of fourth graders in the U.S. are reading below a Proficient level, according to the most recent National Assessment of Educational Progress.
- 61% of low-income families have no books for children in their homes, and more than 80% of the preschool and after-school programs serving at-risk children have no books at all.
- Approximately 8.7 million fourth through twelfth grade students struggle with required reading and writing tasks in school. For many adolescent students, ongoing difficulties with reading and writing figure prominently in the decision to drop out of school.
The Boy and I gathered up a few books from his book collection and asked family and friends on Facebook and around town to help us build a donation in the BIG GREEN TUB and now we are ready to show off how we did!!
My boy thought these nature books would be great in his Pre-K classroom.
We received a lot of cardboard children's books that I think would be great for the baby and wobblers' rooms.
I was surprised at how many of the books were new and we also had a few used books. There were books for all age groups so the babies, wobblers (toddlers), three and four year old classes, as well as the Pre-K class should all have great new collections now!!
We even ended up with a nice little collection of Christmas books!!
We couldn't forget to add in our Nickelodeon books that we picked up for a great price at Walmart.
Help Them Read! Nickelodeon Big Help Book Drive Donation #NickCFK
The Boy just could not wait to take our BIG GREEN TUB of books with us this morning and tell Mr. Carl all about his Champions for Kids SIMPLE Service Project!! He was jumping up and down at home and talking about it all the way there. He climbed up in a chair in the lobby and waited for Mr. Carl to come out and then you could barely understand what he was saying because he was grinning so big. I am just so proud of my little man for getting excited about donating to others and I told him that tonight we would go back to Walmart and get him a few more new books to keep.
You can be One of Millions too!!
We found out that holding a book drive was easy and fun and I would like to encourage everyone to pick up a BIG GREEN TUB of their own and fill it with books for a needy organization in your own community!! Participate in the Nickelodeon Big Help Book Drive in your own community and report it on the Champions for Kids website.
Become ONE OF MILLIONS and help Champions for Kids meet their goal of 20 million people served by 2020.

This is a great program for the kids. I love to read and I read to my grandson every day that I have him. He actually said to me the other day -hes 4- gramma I love to read. We have tons of books that I buy at our local thrift store for cheap. Please read to your children so they learn to love to read
Reading IS essential for young minds! We started out daughter early, as soon as she came out! Now she is one and looks forward to story time every night. My husband and I help an organization that supports childhood reading here in town and I am happy to see others helping out aroud the country!
There is NO better gift than the gift of literacy!
reading is very important. good program!

Thanks Christy – my son said Mr. Carl brought out a couple of the books already into his class and he was excited that the teachers read them to his class.
