The Barefoot Executive – Book Review @barefoot_exec

I don’t know if I’ve ever actually considered starting a business from home full time. I probably haven’t ever felt like I would be successful, confidence issue, you know… Since I started my blog, I’ve realized that I might possibly be able to be successful in a business and have thought about it a lot more recently.

I came across The Barefoot Executive by Carrie Wilkerson and thought I would just give it a look and see what I thought and it’s given me quite a bit of confidence that this at-home business talk might be worth delving into a little more.

Carrie has broken down the “Be Your Own Boss” dream into achievable bites and presents it in a real world, easy to understand and process, ways.

Here’s what you’ll learn (from the inside cover):

Your “why” – Why do you want to work for yourself?

What type of business best suits your experience and talents?

How to stay focused on your goal and avoid distractions.

Where to find the support that will accelerate your success.

How to link your business to the right market.

My favorite part about Carrie’s approach in this book is that she starts with the scary stuff, breaks it all down, and then builds you back up and by the end, I was excited to take on a new challenge!!

Part One: Myth Breakers

Carrie talks about how your current “stable” job can become your former job in today’s economy and urges you to take action and begin to make your own plan – “and Fast”

Part Two: The Three Big Mistakes

It’s always nice to know the mistakes BEFORE making them and this book lays them out there for you. Don’t chase someone else’s dream, get lost down the rabbit hole, or get pulled in by the fast buck.

Part Three: The Methods

Five methods to truly get you the success you are seeking are discussed in detail and you get achievable steps to take that don’t feel overwhelming. Some of these methods appear obvious to begin with, but Carrie has really broken them down and taken the clichè out of them.

Part Four: The Models

What type of business fits your dream the best? Are you looking to use your skills or provide coaching and/or consulting? Are you looking to share information or is direct sales your route? Are you confident that your dream would be best served as a commission based or affiliate marketing or are you looking for multiple streams of income? This book explains them all in a quick and easy way so you know the best route to take.

Part Five: The Marketplace

When you’re ready to jump out there with all of this new knowledge, how will you market and where?

The Barefoot Executive is a quick read because it does not require an MBA to understand. It’s professional and down to earth and gives the information in an organized way. At the end of each chapter, the book you will find Barefoot Action Steps and Barefoot Case Studies to help in further processing the information and putting your own plan into action. The book is designed not necessarily to read cover to cover, but to help you where you are at this point in your business. Carrie explains that if you’re still working full time, but considering (like me!!) you can bring along sticky notes and highlighters for the read. If you’re in the middle of your business, but something’s not working, you can start with the mistakes and see where you may have gone wrong. If you’re off the ground and ready to market, then skip over to the sections on building your audience. This book covers it all!!

Carrie Wilkerson: Author of The Barefoot ExecutiveCarrie is a wife and mom of four who, like many of us, has the demands of health, family, finances and community. After finding herself over six figures in debt, overweight & overwhelmed, she decided to take matters into her own hands. Being denied for job interviews and feeling hopeless, she started her first profitable business at home. With no official business training, 2 little ones at home, a husband traveling with his job and zero start up capital, Carrie launched a small business that grew to the six figures its first year. She has now founded and sold several companies, paid off every dime of debt, added 2 more kids to the mix and believes you can create a part time or full time business on your terms.
