It is true, coupons can save you money, but it’s up to you how much money you actually want to save. I am sure you have seen the show Extreme Couponing, or at least heard about it. Well scratch those ideas right out of your head. To do what those shows portray you would have to break every store's coupon policy along with not following the correct use of the coupons.
For example, a local store on the Eastern side of the states, Giant Eagle says you can use 12 of the same coupons in one shopping trip. However, if those coupons are Proctor Gamble coupons you are only permitted to use 4 of the same coupons in a trip, according to their terms.
The good news is you are able to get the deals, you are able to get plenty of free stuff and you are able to stockpile. But it takes a lot of work!
To coupon legally, you need to make various trips to the stores and have a stockpile of coupons you can use. These coupons can be obtained by printing online, ordering from online clipping services and by purchasing your local Sunday paper.
To start you need to familiarize yourself with your stores coupon policies. Next, you will need to study the stores sales and match up coupons looking for the best deals.
Example of a deal:
Barilla Pasta 10/$10.00
Coupon: $0.55/1 (these coupons have no restriction on how many can be used at a time, but your store may have a restriction on how many of the same coupons they will accept at a time)
If you would use 10 coupons your total reduction would be: $5.50 or $11.00 if your store doubles
Final Prices:
- $4.50 for 10 boxes of pasta if your store does not double
- $1.00 overage to apply to your remaining balance if your store doubles and gives overage
- $0.00 if your store price adjusts coupons
If your store doubles this would apply an extra dollar to your remaining balance due of your groceries, but some stores will adjust your coupons so there is no “overage” but this still would result in free product.
These types of deals can be found for most products available. It takes time to work out these types of deals. But if you are on a budget they are worth your time and effort to get your groceries free or at greatly reduced costs.
The Coupon Bible was created by Sandy and Melissa, who started the site in hopes of sharing deals and coupon knowledge with others and to help everyone learn how to save as much money as possible at the store. Their goals are to teach everyone what they have learned through years of shopping the deals and using coupons.

You are so welcome…but really, thank you!!!
I swear – coupons are difficult and take too much time. Also I never end up with the same results, because each region prices thins differently – Ugh
Being smart about couponing is #1. Sure the extremists save a heck of a lot of money but, like you said, some are breaking the rules (and the law in some cases). Great article on the benefits of correctly and legally couponing.
