Planes Inspired Non-edible Cookie Ornaments Tutorial
This Planes inspired non-edible Cookie Ornaments tutorial has been compensated by Collective Bias, Inc. All stories, photos, and opinions are my own. Looking for something to do on Christmas Day? #PlanesToTheRescue #CollectiveBias
Planes, trains, and automobiles…the stuff of boys’ dreams. My boy is obsessed and with Christmas coming this week, we needed an activity that would keep us occupied, incorporate our favorite things, and give you a few ideas for activities to do on Christmas Day. So, we made these non-edible cookie ornaments, played with a few of Benjamin’s favorite toys, and made a list of things to do on Christmas Day once the new toys were opened and set aside and the inevitable “I’m bored” came out.
My boy has become obsessed with the movie, Planes and Planes: Fire and Rescue, and these toys are a part of every activity we do lately. He has all of the characters and a few other toys so they joined us in our cookie ornament making activity. We gathered up all the cookie cutters we could find (don’t you just love the Ninjabread Men?) and started making non-edible cookie ornaments for our tree. And, yes, we hadn’t put the tree up until this weekend (don’t judge) so with Christmas coming this week, we decided this weekend was our last chance.
What you’ll need:
4 cups flour (non-rising)
2 cups salt
1 1/2 cups of water
What you’ll do:
Mix all the ingredients together until you have a dough. Knead the dough for 10 minutes until it is soft enough to roll out. Roll out the dough the same as if you were making cookies. Tip: lightly dust the table with more flour so the dough doesn’t stick (hence, the poster board to keep the red table from getting too messy). Cut out your “cookies” with cookie cutters or free hand a few shapes in your favorite (Planes inspired) shapes. Make a small hole in the top of your “ornaments”.
If you have time to let them dry and harden overnight, go for it, but we aren’t a patient bunch so we baked ours for 20 minutes on 350º. Don’t forget the hole before you bake them. I almost did and that would have been difficult to put hangars on them for the tree. Once they are cool, paint or color them to make them festive!
Benjamin and his cousin, P, had a blast painting their ornaments. Even my sister got into it a little with her fancy pants designs. She is a little more creative. We made “boy crafts” and she makes “girl crafts”. I guess it’s a good thing that she’s the one who had the little girl.
Once the paint is dry, pop in a tree hangar and hang them on the tree. Don’t laugh at my free-hand plane ornaments. I know the big one looks like like a shark…and Benjamin says the little one looks like a monster. Oh well…at least he got his planes!
More Activities for Christmas Day
I don’t know about at your house, but once the presents are opened and the toys have been played with for 10 minutes or so, the boxes are cleaned up, and the wrapping paper is in the trash, I often hear “I’m bored”. All that build up and excitement is over and the kids just don’t know what to do with themselves. Make the cookie ornaments for a fun activity, but here’s a few more ideas:
Design a city with Planes toys
I know, I know, your kids just got all new toys, but you might have a few stashed away or the kids may already have some of these toys, but if you don’t, you should totally run to the store before Christmas and pick up some of these Planes toys that are on Rollback right now and stash them away for the boredom. Play with the kids and design a city based off the toys from the Planes movies. Benjamin and I had a couple of hours of fun with these Planes toys that I picked up.
My store has a ton of Planes toys on Rollback now. See all the red and white signs! I picked up one of the playsets and an extra die-cast character for $4.97 this past weekend so we would have some extra toys to play with while we were making cookies. I also secretly picked up these toys for Benjamin for Christmas (he is going to be stoked!): Disney Planes Flight to the Finish Speedway (Rollback to $24.97), Disney Planes Fire & Rescue Die-Cast Vehicles, 3-Pack (Rollback to $14.97), and Disney Planes Fire & Rescue Deluxe Talking Vehicle Assortment (Rollback to $19.97). I can’t wait until he opens it all on Christmas Day and we get to set up the whole scene from the movies on our kitchen table!
Read a book (about Planes, of course)
Benjamin loves to read and he told me that he misses school when they are on break, so I picked up a Planes book for him to read as well. Reading is such a relaxing and fun activity to do on Christmas Day. I also have three chapter books about planes, trains, and automobiles for Benjamin’s stocking that I’ll be encouraging him to read this year. He’s been putting off chapter books because he likes to have time to finish the book, but it’s time for him to delve into the fun of a long book.
Watch a Movie
Finally, this is a tradition for my family and many families I know. We love to watch movies on Christmas Day and there are so many to choose from. I picked up Planes: Fire and Rescue (we already own Planes) for Benjamin this year and he’s going to be stoked! I think I’ll try to find a planes cookie cutter between now and then and we may just end up having a Planes-themed Christmas Day.
I love it. My kids would love making these.
These are totally fun. I especially love that the kids can decorate them exactly as they feel inspired.
I have never made non-edible ornaments with the kids, but now I’m really regretting that we didn’t do that this year. I’ll have to stash this idea way for next year, because it’s awesome! Tell Benjamin I love his ornaments and ask him if he’ll make one for me! #client
What great projects for little ones! And you’ll cherish those!
This is a super fun idea. I love that your kids were able to make some ornaments to hang on your tree.
That is such a great idea. I love how they look like real cookies.
Oh boy my boys would love making those ornaments. What a fun way to decorate the tree!
Your son really looks like he is enjoying himself! I love that he loves to read!!
Oh I love these. I bet its so fun to dig them out the next year and see what the kids made and hopefully keep them for along time.
We make salt dough ornaments every year. My kids love it
